The Arrival - Shaun Tan
'The Arrival' - Shaun Tan - (128 pages, English, hardcover, published by Hodder Children's Books)
The Arrival
The Arrival is a wordless story about a man who leaves his family behind in search of better times in a distant and unknown land. Upon arrival, he is a stranger in a strange land. The language, the people, and the customs are riddles to him. With nothing more than his suitcase and a handful of banknotes, he sets out in search of a place to sleep and work...
It is the story of so many immigrants, a story of hope for a better future. The road to get there is fraught with many pitfalls, violence, and deceit, but also with humanity and empathy. Illustrator Shaun Tan, the son of a Chinese immigrant, knows how to give shape to this story like no other. Consequently, The Arrival is considered by many to be one of his best works.
Shaun Tan previously worked as a concept artist for Pixar's 'Wall-E', among others, and wrote/directed the film adaptation of his book 'The Lost Thing', which was awarded an Oscar in 2011.
