Gleem – Freddy Carrasco
Gleem – Freddy Carrasco – (216 pages, English, softcover, published by Drawn & Quartely)
Gleem
A little boy is bored during a church service, but that changes quickly after taking psychedelic drugs. Meanwhile, a group of friends is looking for a special battery because their android has malfunctioned. Welcome to the world of comic book creator/artist/musician Freddy Carrasco. According to the comic book creator, the Afrofuturistic comics in Gleem are loosely inspired by his childhood. The absurd nature of the book is a reflection of how he grew up as a little boy in a deeply religious environment.
Freddy Carrasco
Rooted in the Dominican Republic and raised in Toronto, Canada, Freddy Carrasco currently lives and works in Japan. The influence of manga and anime is clearly evident in his handwriting, monochrome color scheme, and use of grids. Although a small part of Gleem is filled with colored pages, it is a unique mix of influences that makes the work a visual spectacle. More recently, Carrasco has focused more on sculpture and had his first solo exhibition at the Tsukigime gallery in Tokyo in September 1924.
