Red Harvest – Michael Cherkas
Red Harvest – Michael Cherkas – (144 pages, English, hardcover, published by NBM Publishing)
Red Harvest
In ‘Red Harvest’, we follow the history of Ukraine through the memories of Mykola. As the son of a peasant family, he is the sole survivor of the famine of 1932, a consequence of the USSR policies led by Stalin. Mykola manages to emigrate to Canada in 1942, and after nearly 60 years, he returns to his native country.
The ‘Holodomor’ ('the plague of hunger') claimed the lives of at least 4 million Ukrainians in the winter of 1932/1933. ‘Red Harvest’ paints a vivid picture of the horrors the country endured under Stalin’s regime. For many in the West, it is a forgotten page in history, but for the Ukrainian population, it is a trauma they are reminded of daily.
