Speak
The school year couldn't have started worse for Melinda. During an end-of-summer party, she called the police in a panic; the party was raided, called off, and many partygoers were arrested. Now, at the start of the school year, she is the scapegoat; no one talks to her or wants to be seen with her. But why she called the police, no one knows…
‘Speak’ is a book about sexual abuse, in which the main character, Melinda, cannot talk to anyone about what happened to her. Parents, teachers, (former) friends—everyone seems too preoccupied with themselves to confide in.
This impressive graphic novel was written by award-winning author Laurie Halse Anderson, herself a victim of sexual abuse at the age of thirteen. To bring the book to life, she collaborated with Canadian comic artist Emily Carroll, known for works such as ‘Through the Woods’ and ‘Guest in the House’.
