The Gulf - Adam de Souza
The Gulf - Adam de Souza – (240 pages, English, softcover, published by Tundra Books)
The Gulf
Frustrated with the well-trodden paths served to her at the end of High School, there is only one way out for Oli: joining a commune. As a child, she once read a pamphlet about the Evergreen commune on Gulf Island; living with nature and with one another. She convinces two friends to skip school and leave for Gulf Island, in search of Evergreen and the start of a new life.
‘The Gulf’ is a moving and relatable coming-of-age story about the clash between ideals and the reality of everyday life. Walking the razor-thin line between hubris and ignorance, the three friends venture out into the wide world on a capricious path. This sometimes puts their friendship to the test, but also brings them closer together. It is a beautiful, unpolished narrative about shedding childhood and awakening to adulthood.
