Reprobus
Please note: this is a German-language graphic novel
Created by a powerful yet fearful ruler, the Reprobus is a creature half-human, half-animal, with unprecedented strength. Sworn to protect his maker, the creature is aimless when it discovers that it has been deceived by its creator. There begins a long quest for what his destiny is, but perhaps even more importantly, who or what he is. A long journey follows through a dark landscape crisscrossed by rivers…
‘Reprobus’, the outcast, is inspired by the medieval legend of Saint Christopher, the patron saint of sailors, pilgrims, and travelers. Due to his height, he is often referred to as the giant Reprobus, who helps travelers by carrying them across the raging river on his shoulders. When, one day, a child asks him to help him cross the river, it seems like an easy task. But during the crossing, the child feels unbearably heavy, and it takes all of Reprobus’s strength to reach the other side. Once on the shore, the child says that he has just carried Christ and all the sins of the world and gives him the name Christopher, the ‘bearer of Christ’.
Markus Färber
The German comic artist, musician, and designer Markus Färber adapted the medieval legend into this impressive graphic novel about a powerful yet tormented being in search of meaning and purpose. The powerful and high-contrast visual language grips the reader from the very first moment and does not let go until the last page. A book that appeals to the reader on multiple levels to tell a story as old as humanity itself.
