Hugues Micol

Comic artist Hugues Micol was inspired by, among others, Akira Kurosawa, who portrayed an absurd, fantasy vision of historical Japan in his films—the so-called "Micolian" Japan. The result is a dynamic and completely textless comic in which his artwork appears to be a tribute to Shigeru Mizuki. However, we also see influences from anime such as Studio Ghibli’s ‘Princess Mononoke’. All in all, ‘GariGari’ (‘skinny’, ‘skin and bones’) is a masterpiece of visual storytelling.
